Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Transport Funding.

Austin Currie

Question:

167 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Public Enterprise whether she is in a position to announce the decision of the EU Community Support Framework Monitoring Committee on the reallocation of Structural Fund assistance decommitted from the light rail project and, in particular, the decision in relation to the railway line from Dublin to Maynooth. [15965/98]

The Maynooth line will benefit from an overall investment of about £19 million. Part of this investment will be funded from the reallocation of moneys originally intended for the LUAS project. The line between Clonsilla and Maynooth will be doubled. Eight additional railcars will be provided for use on this line. New signalling will also be put in place.

The decisions made by the EU Community Support Framework Monitoring Committee were announced by my colleague, the Minister for Finance on 25 June 1998. As a result of these decisions almost £70 million of EU assistance will be invested in public transport projects. Of this amount approximately £40 million in EU aid is to be allocated to Dublin suburban rail and DART improvement measures and a further £5.5 million is to be provided for the purchase of 50 buses for use on quality bus corridors.
