Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Civil Defence.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

173 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if he will initiate a review of the conditions of service of the Civil Defence and, in particular, the clause which permits a local authority to dispense with a member's service without cause assigned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16329/98]

Civil Defence is a national organisation established by statute. The structure in place provides for the efficient running of Civil Defence at local level under the control of the county/city manager, and the Civil Defence officer. It is essential for the efficient and effective operation of the organisation that this structure is adhered to. A review of the organisation's development plans now under way will review all aspects of Civil Defence, including conditions of service.
