Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rural Environmnent Protection Scheme.

Jim Higgins

Question:

209 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if it is a condition of eligibility for the REP scheme that the applicant must maintain boundary fencing. [16014/98]

This is not a condition of eligibility for the rural environment protection scheme, REPS, but participants in the scheme are required, in the first year of their plan, to stockproof all external boundary and roadside fences, whether walls, hedges or posts and wire. Failure to meet this requirement incurs a financial penalty.

Each applicant's agri-environmental plan sets out the necessary maintenance requirements with which the applicant must comply.
