Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospice Services.

Jack Wall

Question:

300 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding a national hospice plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16141/98]

As part of the national cancer strategy, a development programme for palliative care is in place which is being funded as part of the strategy. Since 1997, a total of £4.6 million has been allocated to the development of palliative care services. This year's allocation of £2.4 million will provide for the appointment of additional consultant physicians in palliative medicine in the Western, Mid-Western and South-Eastern Health Boards with support staff and the provision of additional support staff and equipment in various hospices around the country. As part of the national cancer strategy, regional directors of cancer services have been appointed in each health board to co-ordinate services and develop a detailed service plan for their region, including palliative care. In addition a national cancer forum has been established to provide a focal point for communication and co-ordination of services. The forum will advise on the development of palliative care nationally, particularly in relation to training and personnel. I recently met with representatives of the Irish Hospice Foundation and I am considering how best to progress the matters raised by the foundation.
