Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Communications Masts.

Austin Currie

Question:

322 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to update the guidelines for planning authorities in relation to masts in view of the fact that there are now three mobile telephone operators and there is growing concern on environmental and health grounds at the location of these masts; if so, when this will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15975/98]

I have no proposals, at present, to update the Guidelines on Telecommunications Antennae and Support Structures which were published by my Department in July 1996. The provisions of the planning Acts and regulations which apply to existing mobile telephone operators will also apply to the third operator.

The health implications of emissions from telecommunications antennae and microwave transmitters are the responsibility of the Departments of Health and Public Enterprise.
