Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Voluntary Housing Sector.

Jack Wall

Question:

331 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to permit persons the right to purchase their homes where the homes are part of a rent subsidy scheme. [16105/98]

The voluntary housing sector in this country is relatively small and is at a development stage. If the sector is to grow and contribute further to meeting housing needs in the coming years, it is necessary that its limited housing stock be retained for renting and not sold off to tenants. I would not, therefore, favour the introduction, at this stage, of a scheme under which tenants in the voluntary housing sector might purchase their dwellings.
