Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Alan Shatter

Question:

338 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will make a decision regarding the construction of the Dundrum and Wyckham by-pass and the realignment of Ballinteer Road; and the reason for the delay in his progressing this matter since the receipt by his Department of the report of the inspector who held the necessary inquiry into the making of the required compulsory purchase orders. [16341/98]

Consideration of the compulsory purchase orders referred to has reached an advanced stage, following their processing through various stages by my Department. There will be no avoidable delay on my part in determining the issue of whether the orders should be confirmed.

Question:

339 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will grant the funds required to South Dublin Council to enable it complete the realignment of the Firhouse Road/Ballycullen Road; and, in this context, if he will allocate to the council the estimated required sum of £4 million to enable these works to be undertaken in 1999. [16342/98]

The maintenance/ improvement of non-national roads in its area, including any proposed realignment of the Firhouse Road, is a matter for South Dublin County Council, to be funded from their own resources, supplemented by State grants.

The initial selection and prioritisation of works/projects in South Dublin to which the various categories of non-national road grants, including EU co-financed grants, should be applied is a matter for South Dublin County Council and I have no role in this matter.

It would be open to the council to prioritise this project and submit an application in respect of it in 1999 for limited remaining EU co-financed funding, if it considers that it would meet with the EU selection criteria.
