Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

341 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo was refused the student summer job scheme; if his means were over the limit; the way in which his assessment was calculated; and the amount by which he is over the guideline limit. [15652/98]

In order to qualify for participation in the students summer jobs scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to that currently applying to applicants for unemployment assistance. The means are calculated in the same way as for an applicant for unemployment assistance.

The person concerned was assessed with weekly means which were £19 in excess of the qualifying limit of £65. When account was taken of household income less deductions for tax, PRSI, etc., the weekly benefit derived by the applicant from broad and lodgings was calculated at £84 i.e. £19 in excess of the qualifying limit.
