Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Housing Grants.

Michael Creed

Question:

348 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if a person (details supplied) in County Cork was interviewed in connection with her application for a gaeltacht house improvement grant; if not, if he will have arrangements made for an immediate interview in connection with this; and the reason this application has not been approved to date. [15660/98]

An application for assistance under the Housing (Gaeltacht) Acts for a new house grant was received in my Department in this case in September 1997.

Following an examination of the case, the application was refused because the Irish language was not the normal language of the household in question.

The applicant was advised to apply for assistance from the Department of the Environment and Local Government and if she succeeds in building a new house for herself and her household in the Gaeltacht and if the Irish language is the normal language of the household within four years she can apply for assistance to my Department under Scéim Spreagtha na Gaeilge. An information leaflet about this scheme has been sent to the applicant.
