Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Law on Sexual Offences.

Nora Owen

Question:

359 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there has been a review of the law dealing with the offence of soliciting, that is, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 1993; if so, when this review was carried out; the action, if any, he has taken as a result of this review; and if he will make a statement on the way in which the current law is working. [15691/98]

Since the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 1993 came into force in July 1993 its implementation has been the subject of review from time to time.

The Deputy will be aware that I recently published a comprehensive Discussion Paper on the Law on Sexual Offences. One chapter of the paper deals exclusively with the laws governing prostitution and related issues. My Department is receiving submissions on the paper from interested individuals, groups and organisations up to 28 August next. All submissions will be taken fully into account in the formulation of any proposals for changes to the law which will ensue from the paper.
