Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Computer Software.

John Gormley

Question:

390 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a report published by Price Waterhouse in May 1998 which suggests that a reduction in the Irish theft and piracy rate in the computer software sector, recently estimated at 70 per cent of packaged business software, could lead to an increase in employment in that sector of up to 2,770 jobs by 2001; whether he has satisfied himself that adequate resources are available to the gardaí to tackle software piracy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15823/98]

I understand that the report referred to by the Deputy was commissioned by Business Software Alliance (Europe). I have been informed by the Garda authorities that all complaints of counterfeit-copyright related computer crimes are investigated by An Garda Síochána. In relation to the theft of computer software they add that this is also subject to ongoing investigation by the Garda with considerable success. I also understand from the Garda authorities that units within the National Bureau of Crimnial Investigation, Harcourt Square, investigate and co-ordinate such investigations which are conducted nationally.
