Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

418 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his Department has received an application for a grant under the recreational facility scheme or major facility scheme funded by the national lottery for the establishment of a community centre to look after the needs of the community of Cobh and the Great Island, County Cork, in matters of recreation, entertainment meetings, care of the handicapped, indoor sports and other requirements of the community, which would cost approximately £1.2 million excluding the value of the site; if he has given consideration to that application; if his Department will recommend a grant being allocated to this worthwhile community project on the understanding that there is no community centre for the Cobh and Great Island area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15719/98]

An application for funding under the sports capital progrmme was received from Cobh community centre in May 1997.

1998 grants under the programme were allocated in April last and all available funds have now been committed to a number of projects around the country. Cobh community centre have been advised that they are not among the projects approved for grant-aid in 1998.

The sports capital programme is currently under review. Accordingly, no further applications are being invited until the review is completed and I am in a position to publicise details of the new schemes.
