Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

422 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the plans, if any, he has to allocate increased public funding to the Irish Amateur Swimming Association through the sports council as recommended by the Report of the Independent Inquiry into Matters Relating to Child Sexual Abuse; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15859/98]

I have indicated that I will consider the issue of funding for the IASA as soon as that organisation has completed their proposed consultations with their wider membership who must be satisfied as to the adequacy of procedures and arrangements in place in their organisation to secure a safe environment for their younger members.

In any future consideration of funding, I shall be taking on board Dr. Murphy's recommendation that increased public funding for necessary reorganisation and training be allocated through the sports council to the Irish Amateur Swimming Association (IASA). In this regard, I will be seeking a re-prioritisation along with the association, of IASA expenditure in favour of these items.
