Jim Higgins

Question:

428 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science the industrial schools in which young offenders are detained; the number of offenders detained in each; and the ages of the offenders. [15805/98]

There are two industrial schools certified under the Children Act, 1908. The schools in question are: St. Laurence's Industrial School, which is part of the Finglas Children's Centre, Dublin 11, and St. Joseph's Industrial School, Clonmel, County Tipperary. Industrial schools cater for children aged nine to 15 years at the time of admission. On Friday 26 June 1998, a total of 30 children were in residence in St. Laurence's Industrial School and a total of 31 children were in residence in St. Joseph's Industrial School.
