Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Richard Bruton

Question:

495 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has issued a grant to ACLD to assist in its work with parents and dyslexic children; and whether ACLD will be given a partnership role in developing a better planned service to cope with dyslexic children, many of whom are not being recognised in time or properly supported. [16331/98]

I can assure the Deputy that I am very much aware of the valuable work carried out by the Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities. In 1997, my Department allocated a sum of £24,971 to the association towards the cost of their administration services and to facilitate access to workshops and summer schools organised by the association for children from disadvantaged areas. My Department is at present considering a request from the association for further funding in the current year. I hope to be in a position to respond to the association shortly. My Department is in ongoing contact with the association on matters of mutual concern and will continue to be available to meet representatives of the association where necessary.
