Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Seán Haughey

Question:

106 Mr. Haughey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will grant a work permit to a Slovakian national (details supplied) living in Dublin 3; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16043/98]

A work permit is required by an employer to employ any person who is not a national of an EU/EEA state. Applications from employers are examined on their merits and permits are issued where appropriate, having regard to the policy in this area which is to ensure that job opportunities which arise in the Stae are, as far as possible, reserved for Irish or EU/EEA nationals.

To date, no application for a work permit has been received on behalf of the person concerned. Applications for work permits are normally only considered from employers in respect of employees who are not yet resident in the country.

Seán Haughey

Question:

107 Mr. Haughey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will grant a work permit to a citizen of the United States of America (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16044/98]

An application for a work permit was received by my Department from an organisation on behalf of the person concerned on 11 February 1998. The application was refused on the basis that no evidence was put forward by the organisation of any reasonable effort to recruit an EU/EEA national for the job such as advertisements placed in the national newspapers. The organisation was so notified on 20 April 1998.

However, in the circumstances of this particular case, I have asked for the matter to be reviewed. I will communicate directly with the Deputy on completion of that review.
