Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Voluntary Fundraising.

Ivor Callely

Question:

114 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on the tremendous benefit and effort of various voluntary groups, parents and friends that raise money and purchase equipment for hospitals; while appreciating the benefit and associated benefits, the considerations, if any, given to recommending or implementing issues that may help reduce the burden of voluntary fund raising; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16421/98]

The Deputy may be assured that I am keenly aware of the long and excellent tradition of fundraising carried out by voluntary groups in the health-related area The ever increasing demand for expensive health services necessitates that will always be a need for voluntary fundraising support. Such groups provide far more than purely financial support, however, and my Department both appreciates and supports the integral role played by the voluntary sector in the provision of health and personal social services in this country.
