Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

115 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Health and Children if funds will be made available to build a psychiatric residential centre in Dungloe, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16422/98]

The North Western Health Board is responsible for the provision of health services, including mental health services, in its area. In line with a key recommendation of the report on the development of mental health services — Planning for the Future — the board is developing a comprehensive range of community based mental health services in each catchment area.

The North Western Health Board is currently renting two houses in Dungloe which cater for the residential needs of psychiatric patients in that area. However, as this accommodation is quite limited and will not meet longer term needs, the board is examining a number of options for alternative psychiatric residential accommodation. The board has not made a specific proposal to my Department to date in this regard.
