Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Network.

Noel Ahern

Question:

130 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the purpose of SI No. 400 of 1994 in relation to the declaration of regional routes; the consultation, if any, with local residents which took place in advance of this; the significance, if any, of being declared a regional route; if it has any significance in relation to Dublin Transportation Office's plans for traffic calming; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16507/98]

The Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order, 1994 (SI No. 400 of 1994) placed the regional road network on a statutory basis; this network had earlier been classified on an informal basis in 1979. All county and county borough councils were consulted prior to the making of the 1994 order.

Traffic calming measures may be provided on public roads generally. Local authorities are empowered to undertake such works under section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994, and the Dublin Transportation Office may, at its discretion, allocate traffic management grants to finance such works within the DTI area.
