Austin Deasy

Question:

152 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding the archaeological excavation works at King John's Castle, Dungarvan, County Waterford; and when it will be open for public viewing. [16566/98]

The archaeological excavation under way at Dungarvan Castle will ascertain the manner in which the curtain wall connected with the shell keep and will investigate the sally port area. It is expected that the excavation will be completed by the end of this month. Following planned capital works involving the barracks, round tower and shell keep, Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department anticipates that the castle could be opened to the public before the end of 1999.
