Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lismore Castle, Waterford.

Austin Deasy

Question:

153 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has viewed Lismore Castle, Lismore, County Waterford at first hand; and if she will discuss its future with the owners on the way in which it can best benefit the locality by a viewing of that part of the castle which is not used for residential purposes in view of its vast historical value and tourist potential. [16567/98]

As Lismore Castle is in private ownership my Department has no function in the day to day management of same and it is a matter for the owners to decide on the extent to which it is opened to the public.

While I have not had an opportunity of visiting Lismore Castle, I understand the gardens are open to the public and I would welcome any proposal by the owners to open parts of the castle as well.
