Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Jim Higgins

Question:

158 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the names of the Garda stations in County Mayo which do not have sergeants. [16548/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the Garda stations in County Mayo which do not have a Garda sergeant are as follows: Ballyvary, Ballycroy, Glenisland, Bellacorick, Tourmakeady, Glenamoy, Ballycastle, Hollymount, Bonniconlon, Cong, Lahardane, Ballindine, Blacksod, Kilkelly, Mulranny, Keel, Newport.

I understand from them that certain Garda stations in Mayo Garda Division are sub-stations of a parent Garda station and have a strength of one member. They add that while a sergeant may not be permanently allocated to these Garda stations a sergeant from a neighbouring Garda station or district headquarters station will have overall responsibility for supervision and policing arrangements in the area concerned.
