Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John Perry

Question:

167 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has in place for the new five teacher school in Collooney, County Sligo, in view of the fact that the site map has been forwarded to the Department and the present facility in Collooney is totally inadequate and is the only co-education area in the diocese of Achonry; when the inspection of the proposed site for the new school will be carried out; the timescale for the project; if his attention has been drawn to the urgency of the matter and the projected amalgamation of the boys and girls schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16396/98]

My Department has not received a formal approach from the schools in Collooney concerning amalgamation. If they wish to amalgamate, my Department will be open to discuss the matter with the schools.

The chairman of the boards of management recently wrote to my Department requesting an architectural inspection of a potential site for a new school building should the schools decide to amalgamate. This inspection took place recently. My Department will be in contact with the school management in the matter. At this stage, it is premature to give a timescale for any possible project.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

168 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science when work will commence on a school (details supplied) in County Meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16397/98]

The post-primary building unit of my Department is currently awaiting the stage three submission, or developed sketch scheme, from the design team in respect of the school referred to by the Deputy. As this project is in the early stages of architectural planning I am not in a position to give a precise date for the commencement of construction. However, everything possible will be done to expedite the architectural planning process.
