The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment of a school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with an agreement on staffing between the Government and the INTO. Schools which are losing posts are experiencing declining enrolments while schools gaining posts are increasing their enrolments.

John Gormley

Question:

171 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Education and Science whether he has received representations on behalf of Haddington Road school, Dublin 4, in relation to the need for an extra teacher; and if he will respond positively to the request in view of the circumstances. [16400/98]

I have received representations concerning St. Mary's Boys' national school, Haddington Road regarding the loss of a teaching post at the school.

Unfortunately, the fifth teaching post at the school will be lost from the end of the current school year because the enrolment at the school declined from 162 pupils in September 1996 to 154 pupils in September 1997. The retention figure for the fifth teaching post is 155.

Additionally, the school also has the services of a shared remedial teacher and a concessionary post due to the school's designation as a disadvantaged school.

In light of the enrolment decline at the school and the overall staffing levels, I regret that I cannot authorise the retention of the fifth teaching post at the school.
