Vol. 493 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Seán Power

Question:

185 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of one teacher primary schools; the number of schools which will receive an extra teacher in September 1998; the plans, if any, he has for those schools which will not have an increase; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16436/98]

Currently there are 124 one teacher primary schools.

An Action Programme for the Millennium contains a commitment to give primary education a clear priority in allocating resources. In this context, the programme specifically states that one teacher schools with ten or more pupils will receive a second teacher.

In the context of considering staffing arrangements for primary schools for the 1998-99 school year, I am examining a range of options, with a view to identifying the most appropriate way to fulfil the Government's commitments to one teacher schools as outlined in An Action Programme for the Millennium. I intend to make an announcement on this very shortly.

Billy Timmins

Question:

186 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Science the specialist teacher resources his Department allocated to the primary sector on a county basis from 1 July 1997 to 25 June 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16437/98]

Billy Timmins

Question:

187 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Science the specialist teacher resources his Department allocated to counties Carlow and Wicklow in the primary sector from 1 July 1997 to 25 June 1998; and if he will provide a breakdown by school. [16438/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 186 and 187 together.

The information requested by the Deputy concerning the number of specialist teachers allocated nationally on a county by county basis during the period in question is not readily available in my Department. This information will be compiled and sent to the Deputy as soon as possible.

Three additional specialist teacher posts were allocated in County Wicklow and two additional specialist teacher posts were allocated in County Carlow during the period in question.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

188 D'fhiafraigh Mr. McGinley den Aire Oideachais agus Eolaíochta an gceadóidh sé múinteoir breise, ceathrú cúntóir, a cheapadh do Scoil Phádraig, Dobhar, Contae Dhún na nGall (sonraí tugtha). [16519/98]

Tá athás orm a chur in iúl don Teachta go bhfuil cead ag na húdaráis bainistíochta i Scoil Phádraig an ceathrú cuntóir a cheapadh don scoilbhliain 1998-99.
