Vol. 494 No. 2

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Enright — the serious concern arising from the threatened closure of the electricity power station in Ferbane which would result in the loss of 350 jobs in County Offaly; (2) Deputy Ring — the need to explain why the Director of Telecommunications Regulation has given a licence to TV3 considering many parts of County Mayo cannot receive this channel; (3) Deputy Keaveney — the need to discuss the potential loss of a substantial number of jobs in Fruit of the Loom plants in Donegal and the serious consequences of such a loss to the local economy; (4) Deputy Matt Brennan — the urgent need for a new fire station in Tubbercurry, County Sligo; (5) Deputy Neville — the need to alleviate the fodder crisis which has arisen in parts of County Limerick; (6) Deputy Brendan Smith — the need for the Minister for Finance to outline the present position regarding the need to retain Objective One status in the next round of Structural Funds in the Border region; (7) Deputy Deenihan — the need to discuss the financial hardship facing many third level students from lower and middle income families because of the inadequacy of the higher education maintenance grant scheme; (8) Deputy Howlin — the circumstances surrounding the sale of lands at Glen Ding, Blessington, County Wicklow, to Roadstone (Dublin) Limited; (9) Deputy Jim Higgins — the urgent need to review Garda procedures and resources in the light of the spiraling number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads; (10) Deputy Sargent — the failure of the Environmental Protection Agency to protect human and animal health in the Shannon Estuary region of County Limerick in granting integrated pollution control licences to heavy industry there, given that the cause of the high level of animal deaths in the region has been linked to aluminium poisoning.

The matters raised by Deputies Howlin, Enright, Jim Higgins and Deenihan have been selected for discussion.
