Question:

348 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total number of dwellings completed in each of the years 1985 to 1989. [18392/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 328, 329 and 348 together.

The information sought is contained in my Department's Annual Housing Statistics Bulletins, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. It is estimated that about 3,500 local authority dwellings and some 40,000 dwellings in all will be completed in 1998. The next assessment of housing need will take place in March 1999.

(Estimate)

The reduction in PCP expenditure on housing between 1987 and 1991 mainly reflects the transfer of the bulk of house purchase loans from the public to the private sector and the termination of the 1985 house improvement grants scheme.
