Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

John Gormley

Question:

336 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to introduce product specific waste treatment programmes for items including scrap cars, used oil, batteries containing toxic substances, household electrical and electronic appliances and motor vehicle tyres; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18277/98]

A programme for the management of waste batteries was published in 1997, in compliance with the requirements of Council Directive 91/157/EEC on batteries and accumulators containing certain dangerous substances. There is a well established system in place for the collection and treatment of waste oils by commercial operators, subject to relevant regulatory controls. It is my intention, in consultation with relevant sectoral interests, to pursue measures to facilitate the treatment and recovery of end-of-life vehicles, used tyres and waste from electrical and electronic equipment, having regard to current EU proposals in relation to these waste streams.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

337 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has satisfied himself with the situation relating to a company (details supplied); in particular, if he has satisfied himself that the company is meeting its recycling targets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18279/98]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 206 of 28 April 1998. The company has since reported formally on its performance and that of its membership since it became operational in July 1997, as well as on future plans. I am satisfied that useful progress has been made but, as I previously indicated, there is considerable scope for further expansion of packaging waste recovery activities. I am closely monitoring developments, in constructive consultation with the company.
