Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballot Papers.

Enda Kenny

Question:

347 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on Government proposals to have photographs included on ballot papers for electoral purposes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18308/98]

Michael Ring

Question:

357 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will confirm that the candidates' photographs will be printed on the ballot papers for the forthcoming European and local elections. [18584/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 347 and 357 together.

It is the intention that candidates' photographs will be included on ballot papers at the next European Parliament elections, which will be held on 11 June 1999. I will shortly prescribe an amended form of nomination paper specifying the technical requirements for these photographs. The question of including photographs on other election ballot papers will be considered in the light of experience at European Parliament elections.
