Vol. 494 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

413 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science the average pupil to teacher ratio in County Laois in respect of second level schools; the way in which this compares with other OECD countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18372/98]

The current standard pupil-teacher ratio at second level is 19:1. The actual pupil-teacher ratio in second level schools in County Laois, when all pupils and teaching posts are taken into account, is currently of the order of 15.6:1. OECD documentation, published in 1997 and relating to the 1995-96 school year, shows that the average pupil-teacher ratio at second level in the countries surveyed is 14.4:1.
