Vol. 495 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

38 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans, if any, she has for the future of the Basin area of Tralee; the work schedule proposed in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19613/98]

The Tralee ship canal restoration project is being carried out by the Office of Public Works on my behalf. A contract has recently been placed by that Office for the excavation and removal of spoil from the Basin area and work will begin shortly. On completion, the extent of repairs necessary to the Basin walls will be assessed and arrangements made for execution of the repairs. Other works will include the installation of a lifting bridge at Blennerville and relocation of services under the canal, restoration to the lock-gates, some minor dredging and installation of navigation aids. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1999.
