Vol. 495 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

65.

asked the Minister for the

Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, under the terms of local authority pensions, pensions are reduced in circumstances where a person qualifies for a contributory old age pension from the

Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs; the way in which this can be justified; and the plans, if any, he has to modify this provision. [19847/98]

The co-ordination of occupational pension and contributory old age pension entitlements is a standard feature of public service pension schemes generally. Co-ordination of pensions ensures that the combined pensions are at least the same as if a single pension were paid in full by the employer. I have no plans to change the system of co-ordination. The commission on public service pensions is at present examining all aspects of public service pension schemes and I understand that its final report is expected early next year.
