Vol. 495 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Flag.

Ivor Callely

Question:

74 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the criteria or regulations in place for the flying of the national flag; the proposals, if any, she has to increase the use or encourage the flying of the national flag; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19832/98]

Protocol dealing with the national flag is covered in the publication, An Bhratach Náisiúnta, published by the Stationery Office. I understand that some time ago the Department of the Taoiseach asked the Genealogical Office to update the publication. When the revision is completed it is intended to circulate it widely to public bodies, schools, libraries and other relevant centres. It is hoped that the revised publication will encourage the flying of the flag more regularly on public buildings and, in the absence of legislation on the subject, ensure its proper display and use.
