Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hazardous Substances.

John Gormley

Question:

115 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the requirement imposed upon golf clubs in the United Kingdom to carry out assessments relating to the control of substances hazardous to health and to prepare safety data sheets having regard to the environmental consequences of the intensive use of herbicides and pesticides, in view of the fact that there are between 450 and 800 active substances contained in different pesticides preparations available on the Irish market and that maximum residue levels have been established to date in respect of only 130 of these; and if he will introduce control of substances hazardous to health regulations requiring the completion of safety data sheets by golf clubs in order to protect the health of those who play golf in Ireland. [20004/98]

Pesticides, including herbicides, are subject to detailed evaluation by the pesticide control service of my Department in accordance with Irish legislation. The legislative requirements are designed to ensure the protection of humans, animals and the environment and are kept under constant review. I am not aware of the particular requirement mentioned which has been imposed on golf clubs in the United Kingdom.
