Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

226 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the number of people from Donegal who have to travel to Dublin for advance oncology treatment; the plans, if any, he has to make this treatment available in Donegal or the north-west; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20061/98]

I have set aside funds under the national cancer strategy to finance the provision of oncology services in the North-Western Health Board area, including Donegal. The board is preparing proposals for the structuring of oncology services in Donegal and Sligo. These proposals will be brought to my Department for consideration when they have been finalised.

I am conscious of the importance of minimising the extent to which patients living in Dongal have to travel to Dublin hospitals for oncology treatments. When the North-Western Health Board's oncology treatment services are in place, the numbers having to travel to Dublin will be substantially reduced, as envisaged in the national cancer strategy.
