Question:

278 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention had been drawn to the existence of Clare Recycling Centre at the time £53,000 was allocated to Clare County Council for recycling purposes; and if this had been set aside in the Estimates. [20486/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 277 and 278 together.

Grant assistance is available under the EU co-financed Operational Programme for Environmental Services, 1994-99, OPES, towards capital expenditure in respect of recycling infrastructure. Applications for grant assistance under this programme were invited in 1996. In November 1997, a grant of almost £53,000 was approved under the OPES in respect of the provision of waste recovery facilities by Clare County Council.
My attention was first drawn to Clare's Recycling Centre in May 1998. I received correspondence from this concern on 11 September 1998 and a reply has very recently issued on the matter raised.
