Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Michael Ring

Question:

298 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if a road (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved for a Gaeltacht road grant in 1998 in view of the fact that it is in a sub-standard condition. [20421/98]

As the Deputy is aware, due to a decision of the previous Government, no money was granted for Bóithre Aise in 1996 and until I became Minister of State in 1997. As a result, my Department received a very large number of applications under Scéim na mBóithre Áise this year, and I was unable to provide funds for all necessary works from the moneys available to me to repair all the eligible roads.

However, the application received by my Department under this scheme for the repair of the road referred to by the Deputy, will again be considered when decisions on the applications to be funded under the scheme in 1999 are being made.
