Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Births to Non-Nationals.

Ivor Callely

Question:

305 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress, if any, of the interdepartmental committee on immigration, asylum and related issues, in particular, proposals to address abuses and deliberate arrangements of births to non-nationals in Irish maternity hospitals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19991/98]

The Deputy's question refers to a recommendation made by the Interdepartmental Committee on Immigration, Asylum and Related Issues last February that legislation should be examined to see what changes might be possible to eliminate abuses of Irish citizenship law in regard to the deliberate arrangement of births to non-national parents here. This recommendaion now has to be considered in the light of the agreement reached in the multi-party negotiations on 10 April and its implementation.
