Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Comptroller and Auditor General's Annual Report.

Question:

19 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps, if any, he will take in response to the last report issued by the Comptroller and Auditor General on the workings of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20256/98]

I understand the Deputy to be referring to the annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General which reported on matters arising from his audit of the appropriation accounts of the public services for 1997.

This report, which was made by the Comptroller and Auditor General on 14 September 1998, is a complex and detailed document. As anybody who has read the report will be aware, the matters raised in my specific area of ministerial responsibility were Garda civilianisation and stores and management of prison capital projects. The report contains the detailed responses of the Accounting Officer to the points raised by the Comptroller and Audtior General. I would refer the Deputy to the comprehensive responses of the Accounting Officer in the report.
