Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

312 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí by rank, allocated to Ballymun Garda station, Dublin 11; the corresponding details for the same date in 1997; and the number of gardaí allocated to Ballymun from the recent graduates of Templemore Training College. [20143/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. For operational reasons, the Garda Commissioner is not in favour of releasing details of Garda strengths by rank, and I share that concern. However, I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda strength, all ranks, of Ballymun Garda station for 1997 and 1998 is as follows:

Date

Strength (all ranks)

31/12/97

57

16/10/98

57

Four probationer gardaí were allocated to Ballymun Garda station in September, 1998. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the situation will be kept under review, and when additional personnel next become available, the needs of Ballymun sub-district will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda districts throughout the country.
