Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Austin Deasy

Question:

316 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to revoke the sections of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 1993, which are raising serious concerns in relation to the safety of prostitutes; and if, in place of this legislation, he will designate specific areas where prostitution can be carried out under licence. [15947/98]

The Deputy will be aware that in May last I published a Discussion Paper on the Law on Sexual Offences. One chapter of the paper deals exclusively with the laws governing prostitution and related issues. The closing date for receipt of submissions was originally the end of August. However, this has since been informally extended so as to enable as many people and organisations as possible to respond to the discussion paper and in that respect submissions are still being received. All submissions will be taken fully into account in the formulation of proposals, if any, for changes to the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 1993, which may ensue from the paper.
