Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Rehabilitative Programmes.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

327 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide a women's resettlement project as proposed by PACE which would be aimed at assisting women to alter the pattern of behaviour that brought them to prison in the first place and to provide rehabilitative programmes and support; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20321/98]

I wish to inform the Deputy that I recently met with PACE to discuss their proposal for a new residential facility for women who are ex-prisoners or on probation. I indicated to PACE my support for the project subject to PACE being in a position to locate a suitable premises. If and when they identify a suitable premises my Department will enter into discussions about funding and management arrangements.
