Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Citizenship Rights.

Question:

357 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Irish citizenship rights of children born to asylum-seekers will be recognised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20573/98]

Children born in Ireland to asylum seekers are Irish citizens and have the same citizenship rights as other Irish citizens. My Department currently has on hands a large number of applications from persons, many of whom are or have been asylum applicants, seeking permission to remain in Ireland as the parents of Irish citizens. Decisions on these cases will be taken as soon as possible.
