Monica Barnes

Question:

34 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a nationwide identity card scheme as provided for in sections 40 and 41 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20208/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 34 together.

I have previously indicated to the House in response to parliamentary questions that arrangements for the introductin of a voluntary age card scheme on the basis of provisions in the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1998, are in the course of being prepared. I have taken a personal interest in this matter because of the importance of doing what we can to address the problem of underage drinking. I have had meetings with the Garda Commissioner on the subject and I discussed the matter again with him within the past week. I am glad to be able to inform Deputies that the necessary regulations are at an advanced stage of preparation and will be introduced as quickly as possible.
