Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Figures.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

33 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason certain Garda divisions were omitted from the recently publicised Garda crime figures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20237/98]

The crime figures the Deputy is referring to are provisional statistics for all Garda divisions and as such are subject to change. They are compiled in order to indicate trends and assist with Garda management decisions.

No Garda divisions were omitted from the figures the Deputy is referring to. The figures supplied for the Garda Divisions of Cork North and Laois-Offaly contained fewer reported crimes for a particular month than was actually the case. The problem was rectified almost immediately.
