Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Right to Silence.

Liz McManus

Question:

40 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received a report from a departmental committee recommending changes in the right to silence of an accused person; if he will publish the report to allow a full debate on its recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20130/98]

I have received a report from an expert group which I established to consider changes in the criminal law which were recommended in the report of the steering group on the efficiency and effectiveness of the Garda Síochána. Issues relating to the right to silence are dealt with in these reports.

I am at present considering the report of the expert group with a view to submitting proposals to Government for changes in the law and in that context the question of making the report publicly available will be considered.
