Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Ivor Callely

Question:

74 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the national policy regarding inquiries made in the country of origin of asylum seekers to establish and verify identity, particularly when asylum seekers have no documentation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19948/98]

The policy is clear. The UN convention specifically precludes the authorities in the country of application from making any inquiries with the country of origin as to the identity of any individual seeking asylum. Officials of my Department are fully compliant with this requirement. Any research of country of origin information is from independent sources, primarily the UNHCR.
