Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

77 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the initiatives, if any, he has taken in the area of crime prevention; the contact, if any, he has had with car manufacturers and retailers regarding the need to improve anti-theft security in cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20257/98]

With regards to anti-theft security in cars, the National Crime Prevention Office and the Stolen Vehicle Recovery Unit, both based at Garda headquarters, Harcourt Square, maintain regular contact with motor distributors and retailers.

I am informed that the more prestigious makes of car have security devices installed at manufacture stage. There is a wide range of anti-theft devices on the market. The quality of the device is, like everything else, reflected in the price and, ultimately, it is the responsibility of the car owner to take appropriate steps to safeguard property.

The Garda take every opportunity to dispense advice on car security at exhibitions, seminars, presentations, etc., and are always available to give specific advice on request. I understand that there are plans to produce a booklet on car security in the near future.
