Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Military Neutrality.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

94 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the implications of Ireland's ratification of the Treaty of Amsterdam and accession to the Petersberg Tasks for the Irish policy of military neutrality; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20079/98]

Ireland deposited its instrument of ratification in Rome on 30 July last, subsequent to the endorsement of the Treaty of Amsterdam by the Irish people in the referendum of 22 May.

I have made clear on a number of occasions in this House that Ireland's policy of military neutrality remains unaffected by the provisions of the Treaty of Amsterdam, including the Treaty's provisions on the Petersberg Tasks.
