Michael Ring

Question:

79 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the funding, if any, remaining under the fishery harbour capital development programme for 1999. [21853/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 77 and 79 together.

A sum of £2.965 million was made available for development of fishery harbours during 1998. Details of the funding to be provided for the fishery harbours development programme in 1999 will be provided in the forthcoming Book of Estimates. I am not in a position to give details of the Estimate at this juncture. I can confirm that post-1998 the remaining European Regional Development Fund funding support for fishery harbour development under the Fisheries Operational Programme, 1994-99, totals £732,000.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

81 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the ports which have benefited from the £2.965 million allocated in 1998 under the fishery harbour capital development programme; the ports which applied and were not considered eligible; and the value and works that needs to be carried out at these locations. [21854/98]

Some £2.965 million has been allocated to subhead G1 of the Marine Vote for the development of fishery harbour infrastructure and facilities in 1998. The locations at which works are being carried out are Ardgroom, Burtonport, Carlingford, Carrickarory, Castletownbere, Cromane, Crosshaven, Dingle, Dunmore East, Greencastle, Howth, Killybegs, Kilmore Quay, Portaloon, Portmagee and Rossaveal. I also secured earlier this year additional funding in respect of Killybegs Fishery Harbour Centre for essential upgrading of existing infrastructure and to advance consideration of new berthage options.

My Department has an extensive list of proposals for fishery harbour developments, comprising projects submitted for consideration under the Operational Programme for Fisheries, 1994-99, other projects submitted subsequently and projects identified by my officials. It is estimated that the total cost of these works would be of the order of £50 million.

I am conscious of the need for sustained investment in harbours infrastructure and I am addressing the issues involved. The provision of funds is a priority and I am actively pursuing the matter.
